Week #7: Explain
Jan. 14-25
Sponsor: Rose Santos
In the main hallway outside the IA-LEAP office, Rose Santos posted a banner-sized poster with pictures of teachers asking a series of words, ideas, or situations for the students to explain. Some questions were related to the teacher’s area of expertise (e.g., appearing next to the art teacher was (Explain how to make secondary colors?) and others were related to life situations (Explain what you would do if you found a five-dollar bill on the floor?) or student awareness of the school calendar (Explain why there is no school on Monday?; the poster was up in the hall during the week before the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday).
Next to the poster was a stack of answer forms for the students to choose one or more of the Explain? topics to explain in writing. The poster was a big hit. The students liked seeing their teachers’ pictures on the poster asking them to explain a something in writing. The open-ended format allowed students of various English proficiency levels to participate.
From all the correct submissions (those which offered accurate and legible explanations), a drawing was held and students whose names were selected received a small prize.
