Week #6: Independent/Dependent

Pam Libertini posted a display with several different questions for the students regarding the different definitions of independent and dependent:
· Using a graph of average daily temperatures for St. Paul, students were asked to “identify the independent and dependent variables of the graph.”
· The sales tax in St. Paul, MN is 6.5% of the purchase price. Is the purchase price independent or dependent? Is the amount of sales tax independent or dependent?
· List one example of how you are independent.
· List one example of how you are dependent.
In Carol Quest’s 1A writing class, students listed at least 10 things they could do independently. One of the most interesting responses--beyond comb my hair and cook my dinner—was "I can appreciate a person who is lonely." Carol writes, “Both the idea and the language surprised me!”
