Week #2: Cycle Oct. 29-Nov. 2 Sponsors: Sandy Mueller and Paul Gore
A word wall was started in the cafeteria using the PowerPoint slide created by Sandy Muellner. She and Paul Gore put up a display in the cafeteria showing the steps in the process used to recycle plastic bottles into rulers and T-shirts. There were two All-School Activities during this week. Sandy, Paul, and Carol Quest set up a brick of crushed cans in the school’s main entrance, where it remained for 2 days. The brick of cans illustrated one step in the recycling process. During the two days the brick was on display, students and staff submitted a written guess of the number of cans in the brick headed for recycling (this activity was intentionally similar to the previous pumpkin activity and use of the word “guess”). Ninety-eight guesses were submitted. On Friday, November 2, the three most accurate guesses were announced; those who submitted these guesses each received a prize. The second activity was a voluntary school-wide recycling day, also on November 2. Paul and Sandy coordinated classroom collection and drop-off of recycling. Sandy’s 1C Science class was trained in gathering and separating recyclable materials. These students also asked teachers in other classrooms if they had any recycling to be picked up. Six students took turns speaking to the teachers. Nine classrooms and the school’s main office participated in this recycling event.
Students gather to look at the box of crushed cans headed for recycling. The students spent time testing the weight and discussing each others’ opinions.
